CryEngine 3 demo impressions

Earlier this month a new video of CryEngine was shown at the SIGGRAPH 2009 conference.
CryEngine is well known to all gamers, well most of gamers. If you haven’t played Crysis you are one of very few…

In video below there are few things I would like to point out.

Even with use of DirectX 9.0c Crytek is managing to create impressive lighting environments with great performance. First part of the video, Sponza atrium, is built from 1.4M triangles and it looks great but I don’t like the camera movement – too fast and too sharp.

Second part, 53” from start is Manhattan apartment is much more interesting. This scene has little bit less details, only 1.1M triangles and it runs at 113 FPS. Author of this demo playes a lot with position of sunlight to illustrate light capabilities of new engine. The engine does it very nicely with diffuse coloured lights bouncing off objects like blue couch/chair or green and red carpets. Real time lighting is really good even if it may not be 100% accurate. I am not saying that it is not but programs like Lightscape create very, very realistic images. Here is a sample.

Apartment_01

Development of the GPU and technologies like CUDA and FireStream enabled us to have scenes like one below in real time. Mind you, this is a screen capture from a video.

CryEngine1

Last part of the video is about handling of object and materials. It starts at 2’26”. It is easy to see how light volumes are affected by objects like carpet. Light is reflecting from it and gives the light reddish colour.

Seeing this functionality really makes me keen to try is out for myself. Even if I could have the engine and the editor only. But if I can get all that plus the good game for about NZ$120 then why not?!

From news on Kotaku Glynnis Talken Campbell will not give voice to Kerrigan. From the same source Karen Strassman will be new Kerrigan.

Lord Of The Rings and Weta cave tour

At the end of last month my wife and I went to Wellington. During four days we saw majority of tourist attractions located within the walking distance from our hotel.

We also went to short Lord Of The Rings tour. This is organized by Flat Earth in Wellington. We went to “The Weta Cave and Rings Tour”.

Weather was not at it best but it held up to Wellington’s reputation – lots of wind. Apart from us, there were three lads from UK (now working in NZ). The tour started with visit to Mt Victoria. Our guide started the tour with lot of information and anecdotes about the making of the movies.

From top of the mountain we went on short ride to the location of the first scene filmed for the Fellowship of the ring.

As you can see on the screenshot our guide is holding the tree has not changed much since then.

Unfortunately, it is not visible on the picture above but houses are just 40 or 50 meters downhill from where we were standing. It is amazing how close it is and you would not know it is filmed in the middle of Wellington.

Not too far is a location of another famous scene. Can you guess which one from picture I took?

After this we went to Miramar where film studios and post production took place. Weta cave is also in Miramar. We made a quick stop at the wharf to look at the old ship. If it looks familiar then you’ve seen the King Kong (Peter Jackson’s version of course). The ship was bought for a $1 by a fan who now lives in the boat. If you have a close look at the third image you may see that there is a lot of painted wood used to mimic riveted steel.

In Miramar we also saw Park Road building – post production studio for Lord Of The Rings trilogy.

The last part of the trip was visit to Weta Cave. It is located in Camperdown Road in the corner of the building and it is packed with items and merchandise from Lord of the rings and other movies Weta worked on.

DSC05455

Part of the Weta Cave is a mini museum. It has quite a few models of characters and items from the movies. These are not for sale. Here are few shots.

I really admire level of details on these models.

DSC05464

There are items for sale and as you may have expected various Precious Rings are available.

 DSC05463

More interestingly there are various items designed by Weta staff that is not created for any movie or project but as something they found interesting. I have to say that reminds me a lot of combination of Jumanji and Bioshock. How? Have a look at next few pictures.

DSC05458

This is very much like Hunter from Jumanji with weapon from Bioshock.

DSC05457

Very strange creatures…

DSC05461

One of the imaginary weapons – Infalliable Aether Oscillator. This model in particular is Manmelter 3600 ZX. Looks like it is using plasma for ammo.

DSC05462
This one could be yours for NZ$1,399 only. These are unique items crafted by Weta designers.

And for the end something that my brother-in-law is teasing me about. He is saying there is a striking resemblance… I know it is not true – I have way more hair (for now).

Starcraft 2 update

There are some interesting news and updates of Starcraft II. Some of these mentioned here are not the latest but are still interesting enough.

Here at Press 2 Play TV is an interview with Dustin Browder, lead designer for Starcraft 2 and Chris Sigtay, lead producer. Topics covered include engine development (from ground up) including graphics engine, reasons for splitting up the game in 3 titles. There are some hints about single player missions:
  • holding off hordes of infested colonists
  • walls of fire burning across the map
  • surviving supernova
Soundtrack and music is also discussed, beta testing, release date…
At the moments audio quality is not too good but you get a lot of info for 17:25 of an interview.

Battle.net Q&A Batch 52
Theme for this batch was Map Maker. Some of the key points:
  • support for custom function definitions, including actions and conditions in Trigger Editor
  • entirely new scripting language called Galaxy. This language is very similar to C.
  • map makers will have the ability to define any number of custom attributes that modify a hero based on its level

Dev talk
Inc Gamers interview with Rob Pardo, Dustin Browder and Chris Sigtay reveals some interesting features :
  • Development of new Battle.net
  • possibility to create mods - "It's EXTREMELY complicated, but it's possible".
  • No support for LAN
  • noob friendly game for casual gamers (view of tech tree, detailed replay, challenges)

Technology tree
Yesterday a couple of sites has shown technology tree for SC2. One of sites is Kotaku.
I guess comments are not really required, so here they are.

Starcraft 2 Battle report #3

Latest battle report from Starcraft 2 is now available. In this battle you’ll see Zerg vs Protoss.

image

The battle is played on brand new map, The scrapyard. Map has several interesting features like narrow bridge connecting players but it is blocked with destructible rocks, smoke vents blocking the view, couple of Xel’Naga watch towers and high yield yellow mineral field.

image
Gameplay is very interesting. Very early in game Protoss (David Kim) took initiative in exploring the map and really annoying Zerg (Yeon-Ho). One Protoss probe successfully stopped Zerg from starting another hatchery (about 2:30 min in game) and scouting entire Zerg base.

Through most of the game Protoss has used Xel’Naga watch towers to his advantage.
image

About 5 minutes in the video David is using new Protoss units, Nullifiers. They have a very powerfull (and really annoying) Force Field feature used to block terrain. David will use this very successfully during this game.

image

On the other hand Zerg is using smoke vents quite efficiently to hide Zerglings and other units.

image

image

In most cases Force Field is used as defensive method but David has used it to trap some Zerglings inside his own base and destroyed them with Probes (about 6:10 min).

Zerg found effective counter measure for Force Field – using Roach and their Burrow ability. Roaches are able to regenerate very quickly and therefore very efficient units.

In this example (8:05 min) Protoss has blocked Roaches with Force Field and in the same time forced Zerg’s Drones to burrow. This attack costed Zerg very much.
image

Now Zerg is taking offensive and attcking with large number of Roaches. Protoss is defending with Stalker units with Blink ability (teleport units over short distance). He was very successfull using Blink that Zerg had to retreat.

In counter attack Protoss did a very smart combo using Phoenix and Voidray. Zerg Queen was lifted in the air (where is is helpless) by Graviton Beam and then destroyed by Phoenix (11:00 min in game).
image

While Queen has been killed Zerg sent a large number of Zerglings to Protoss base and managed to morph four of them into Banelings. These Banelings managed to kill a large number of Protoss probes and two Photon Cannons and damaging his economy.
image

Protoss then took initiative and attacked the Zerg base. But here there is a surprise when Zerg used Infestor (burrowed in upper left in picture below) and it’s Neuro Paralyse ability (aka mind control) and he used it on Immortal to delete Protoss own Stalkers (about 14:18 min).
image

has another important ability, to move while burrowed.
image

This can be very important and effective weapon. In the same time Protoss is building couple of Colossus units that will pose real threat to Zerg. Luckily for Zerg Infestors did work and Colossus were under Zerg control and destroyed all attack force of Protoss. Once that was done Zerglings did a good job of destroying both Colossus.

But this move was just a small success because Protoss has attacked both Zerg expansions. That was the winning move for Protoss. Without expansions Zerg was unable to recover.

Of course, I didn't mention every move in the match so have a look at the video.

This was very interesting match and we saw how to play against Protoss and what may be the coming your way. Lets hope to see more battles and maybe longer ones too.
